Brought to you by Coney Island U.S.A.

Coney Island is famous for its historical exhibitions of living forms, from the human to the non-human and beyond. Displaying everything from "freaks, geeks and human curiosities" to a bewildering assortment of captured and caged animals, the menagerie was central to the thrills of old Coney Island - and to its exploitation.

For 3 evenings only - March 31-April 2 - International Culture Lab gathers an idiosyncratic "menagerie" of 20 Butoh performers who-under the guidance of Mexican master teacher Diego Piñón-will explore this history through body rituals on Coney Island USA's Sideshows by the Seashore stage. Joined by a revue of burlesque, art, and musical acts beyond Butoh but exploring these central themes, each evening will be a unique extravaganza.

Butoh was born when Japanese dancer Tatsumi Hijikata created the radical art form in the post Hiroshima/Nagasaki environment and was greeted with ridicule and indignation. Though Butoh in its contemporary worldwide incarnations is notoriously difficult to define, the uncovering of humanity's shared core, the ritualistic quest for transformation, playful and grotesque imagery, eroticism, breaking taboos and redefining beauty are common themes.
